5th Annual Jump For Archie Invites Community Action To Fight The Opioid Crisis And Mental Health Stigma

May 15, 2019
(WAUKESHA, WI) – Today, members of the public are invited to take action against the opioid crisis and mental health stigma at the 5th Annual Jump for Archie Concert and Training at Oconomowoc’s City Beach (324 W. Wisconsin Ave) from 5 pm until dusk. Live music, food and a fun community atmosphere will accompany a candlelight vigil; free Naloxone and suicide prevention trainings; public group jumps into Lac La Belle; and resources on addiction, mental health and suicide prevention.

“The Jump for Archie is an amazing event because it brings awareness to the opioid epidemic while empowering people to take action against it,” said Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. “The Jumps are very visual way to show support for these issues, while encouraging people to open up about their experiences, and to get training in case they are ever faced with an overdose or mental health crisis.”

Free Naloxone and Question Persuade and Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training registration is available at jumpforarchie2019.eventbrite.com. A free dose of Naloxone will be provided to participants of that training.

At 7:15, a series of group “Jumps” into Lac La Belle will give members of the public, first responders, individuals living in recovery, and friends and family of suicide survivors the opportunity to take action against the opioid crisis and mental health stigma. Each jump will be captured by professional videographers, in partnership with National Prevention Week, as part of a nationwide campaign in support of actionable substance use disorder recovery and positive mental health and suicide prevention.

About the Jump for Archie
On May 15, 2014, 19-year-old Archie Badura was one of the 622 people who died as a result of an opioid overdose in Wisconsin. On the day of his burial, family members jumped into water fully clothed in his memory, letting Archie know his death would not be in vain. His family later started the “Jump for Archie” action and change campaign to highlight opioid dangers and the toll addiction takes on families.
