Waukesha, Wis. (October 17, 2018) –the Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha County’s 4th Annual Housing Champions Awards Luncheon was held last Tuesday at Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield. The event raised awareness of the issue of the lack of affordable housing in Waukesha County and how collaborative efforts in the community can make it a reality. Several individuals and organizations working to increase the amount of affordable housing in the region were recognized at the event.

The Housing Action Coalition of Waukesha County (HAC) and Eaton Corporation were named Habitat Waukesha’s 2018 Housing Champions. Bliffert Lumber & Hardware was named Industry Supplier of the Year, and community member Bob Beglinger was named Volunteer of the Year. Each was recognized and presented an award at the event.

The luncheon, emceed by TMJ4’s Charles Benson, opened with audience members reading biographies about the different types of housing needs in Waukesha County. Diane McGeen, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha County, introduced the idea of three ‘doors’ to housing. The first door represented the emergency/temporary housing, the second door representing apartments/rental housing, and the third door representing home ownership. Audience participation created a pathway to move up between the doorways.

Award Presenter, Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow, spoke about the four award winners and their contributions to Habitat’s goal of increasing affordable workforce housing in Waukesha County. He recognized the commitment of organizations and individuals in our county and commended them on their achievements.

“Waukesha County needs more affordable workforce housing with home ownership as the most stabilizing for families and the community. This year we wanted to acknowledge the entire scope of need and how individuals and agencies working together can create that payway of hope.” said Diane McGeen, Executive Director of Habitat of Waukesha County.

Waterstone Bank and Waterstone Mortgage were presenting sponsors for the event.
