Over 700 girls will be recognized for improving our communities

Milwaukee, May 17, 2017Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast will honor more than 700 Girl Scouts for achieving the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn at the annual Highest Awards Celebration. Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards will be given to Girl Scouts who have identified issues they were passionate about, and then undertook impactful projects to improve their communities and make the world a better place. Twelve Girl Scouts will be receiving the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award and 705 Girl Scouts will be receiving their Silver and Bronze awards. The celebration will take place on Monday, May 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.* at the Miller High Life Theatre, 500 W. Kilbourn Avenue, Milwaukee.

This year’s Girl Scout Gold Award recipients provided sustainable solutions to help change the world with projects such as:
  • Traveling to Peru to educate the community on the importance of clean drinking water, building gravity-fed purification filters and teaching families how to maintain them.
  • Designing a game room and scavenger hunt for families and children staying at the Ronald McDonald House while a loved one was hospitalized.
  • Creating an after-hours machine shop class at her high school, offered to female students who were not signing up because they were too intimidated to take the prominently male class during traditional school hours.
  • Removing invasive species from a local nature center, replacing with native plants and offering educational activities for future visitors teaching the importance of native species in landscape designs.

“We are extremely proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these confident, dedicated, and forward-thinking girls,” said Christy Brown, CEO, Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. “They are go-getters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders who are practicing everyday leadership to make a difference in our community and in the world.”
