Girl Scouts to Host 100th Anniversary Celebrate the Promise Event

Girl Scout Leadership Awards to honor four dynamic women leaders 

Milwaukee, May 24, 2017 – Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) announce a new signature event, Celebrate the Promise, to commemorate 100 Years of Girl Scouting in Southeastern Wisconsin. By historical record, the first Girl Scout troop formed in the state of Wisconsin occurred on the playground of Clarke Street School in Milwaukee in May 1917. 

Presented by Associated Bank and the Milwaukee Brewers, Celebrate the Promise will honor four inspiring women leaders who are engaged in strengthening and building our communities through their philanthropic and corporate leadership, and who serve as role models for girls. Girl Scout Leadership G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) ™ award recipients being honored are ‘Go-Getter’ Anne Zizzo, President & CEO, Zizzo Group – An Engagement Agency; ‘Innovator’ Shontra Powell, Global Business Executive, Growth, Innovation and Transformation; ‘Risk-taker’ Griselda Aldrete, President & CEO, Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee; and ‘Leader’ Joan Shafer, Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness, WEC Energy Group. Keynote speaker Connie Lindsey, past National Board President of Girl Scouts of the USA and Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Diversity & Inclusion at Northern Trust in Chicago, will deliver an inspirational address on how Girl Scouting has helped shape her life and career.

Celebrate the Promise will be held on Thursday, June 29 in the Pilot House at Discovery World. Event co-chairs are DeVona Wright Cottrell, Director and Associate General Counsel, Robert W. Baird & Company, and First Vice Chair, GSWISE Board of Directors; Kerrie Hoffman, Community Volunteer and Member, GSWISE Board of Directors; Kate Schlesinger, Director of Corporate Learning, University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business, Center for Professional and Executive Development; and Rick Schlesinger, Chief Operating Officer, Milwaukee Brewers.

As the premier leadership organization for girls, we are committed to helping all girls reach their full leadership potential to make the world a better place,” stated Christy Brown, Chief Executive Officer, GSWISE.

Event proceeds will support opportunities for all girls to participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to discover their values, skills, and the world around them; connect with others in a multicultural environment; and take action to make a difference in their world.
