HAWS’ MOD SQUAD PROGRAM GROWS TO MINNESOTA

June 19, 2017
On Thursday, June 22, the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County (HAWS), will welcome a representative from a Minnesota animal shelter that has created their own behavior modification program, modeled after the groundbreaking and very successful Mod Squad program begun at HAWS in 2009. To date, HAWS’ Mod Squad program has saved the lives of nearly 1,500 dogs.

Great River Rescue in Bemidji, Minnesota began their Mod Squad about 3 years ago, with the direction of Dr. Claudeen McAuliffe, the architect of HAWS’ Behavior Department and Mod Squad program. Ethan Larson, Mod Squad Coordinator at GRR, is looking to improve their program, and explore best practices with his in-person visit to HAWS.

Larson will spend the entire day of June 22 at HAWS. His itinerary includes:
9:00 am           Tour of HAWS’ Shelter
10:00 am         Participation in all aspects of behavior evaluations of HAWS’ adoptable dogs
1:00 pm           Shadow/ work with HAWS’ Mod Squad volunteers/department employees
4:00 pm           Presentation of Great River Rescue’s Mod Squad to HAWS staff

“The two Mod Squads can learn from each other. Each has a piece of the puzzle to make our programs better,” notes Larson. “It will be great to see how HAWS’ program works and then also to share what I have done with my team.”

Dr. McAuliffe states: “HAWS’ Behavior Dept is very proud of the partnerships it has established with other shelters, and how many more dogs find great homes when shelters work together. It also validates what we do here: Our programs work successfully in other shelters to increase adoptions, decrease euthanasia, and create a very empowered and motivated volunteer force. We are excited to hear how successful a program, with roots at HAWS, has been in a different part of the country.”
HAWS, a non-profit organization established in 1965, assists 8,000 animals each year and welcomes more than 35,000 human visitors to our shelter annually.
As an open admission and full service shelter, HAWS assures sanctuary for animals in need while offering many diverse educational programs and services to promote responsible pet ownership and prevent animal abuse.
The shelter is located at 701 Northview Road in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
