SOIL HEALTH WORKSHOP FOR PRODUCERS & LANDOWNERS

(WAUKESHA, WI) –Waukesha County Land Resources Division is hosting a Soil Health Workshop for producers and landowners on February 23, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This workshop will be held at Retzer Nature Center, S14 W28167 Madison Street, Waukesha, WI 53188. Registration is free and lunch will be provided. 
 
According to the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use Strategic Plan, improving soil health can play a key role in meeting our clean water goals, while at the same time improving soil productivity. At the workshop, attendees will learn how to increase soil organic matter and improve microbial activity by farming with soil health management that includes no-till, cover crops, and diverse rotations.
 
Michael Patin, District Conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, will begin the workshop with a presentation about the principles of soil health. Next, Heidi Johnson, Crops and Soils Educator UW-Extension for Dane County, will talk about the types of cover crops to plant. The workshop will conclude with a producer panel that will discuss what is working for them such as seeding methods, costs, and more. Local resources will be provided to help you build soil health.
