Thrivent Helps Open Window to the Wild

September 24, 2018
MILWAUKEE – September 20, 2018 – The Zoological Society of Milwaukee is pleased to announce a $100,000 donation from Thrivent Mutual Funds in support of the Window to the Wild Capital Campaign. The first phase of the campaign will create a new area called Adventure Africa. This project will transform 25% of the developed footprint of the Zoo and will create new homes for the elephants, African hoofstock, hippos and rhinos. Adventure Africa will be the largest physical change to the Milwaukee County Zoo since its opening in 1961.
Thrivent’s generous donation will help create one of three educational adaptation stations near the new elephant exhibit and African hoofstock yard. Like the rest of the educational graphics within Adventure Africa, the three adaptation stations are meant to educate and engage visitors while observing the animals. One station will show how an elephant’s trunk can aid in its survival, while another will explain the way an elephant’s ear does more than help them hear. “We are incredibly grateful to have played a positive role through our partnership with the Zoological Society toward the goal of Adventure Africa,” says Brandon Tschacher, director of marketing. “We know education’s critical role in our community and are excited to see it grow through these programs.”
As a partner with Milwaukee County, the Zoological Society has set a goal to raise $25 million for its portion to support Adventure Africa. Thanks to Thrivent’s donation, the Society has raised more than $17.4 million. “We are excited Thrivent Mutual Funds will help in the education of guests inside the Zoo,” says Jodi Gibson, Zoological Society president and CEO. “Their donation will not only educate people, but will help create a better understanding of animals and the world around us.”
The Milwaukee County Zoo is the only zoo within a six-hour drive that houses elephants. Thanks to Thrivent’s donation, the Zoological Society is closer to its $25 million goal. The elephant exhibit and African hoofstock yards are expected to open in spring 2019.
