WAUKESHA COUNTY AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER COMMEMORATES WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

June 04, 2018
(WAUKESHA, WI) – In observation of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day the Aging & Disability
Resource Center (ADRC) of Waukesha County will host a panel discussion on financial exploitation and
protecting one’s assets at the Schuetze Recreation Center on June 15 in Waukesha from 11:30 AM to 1:00
PM. Reservations can be made at (262) 548-7848. Free lunch is included.

“At the same time that the aging population is growing, a startling number of elders face abusive
conditions,” said ADRC Manager Mary Smith. “Every year financial elder abuse costs American seniors
over $36 billion in losses. This panel aims to increase awareness of the issue and to help seniors and their
families prevent it from happening in Waukesha County.”

Panel members will provide an overview of the issue, focus on prevention tips, and discuss what to do if
you are concerned someone may be the victim of financial exploitation.  Panel members include
representatives from a financial institution, an advocate from the Elder Rights Project, and Waukesha
County Adult Protective Services.

About World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to
raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders. The International Network for the
Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations (UN) launched the
first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2006 in an effort to unite communities around the
world in raising awareness about elder abuse. WEAAD is in support of the UN’s International Plan of
Action acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
