Waukesha County Aging and Disability Resource Center Commemorates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

May 23, 2019
(WAUKESHA, WI) – In observation of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Waukesha County will host an internet safety presentation for senior citizens at the Ingleside Hotel on June 13 in Pewaukee from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Reservations can be made at (262) 548-7848. Free lunch is included. The deadline for reservations is June 10, 2019.

“A startling number of elders are victims of scams and have their identities stolen,” said ADRC Manager Mary Smith. “Every year financial elder abuse costs American seniors over $36 billion in losses. This event aims to increase awareness of the issue and to help seniors and their families prevent it from happening in Waukesha County.”

Detective Timothy Loberg of the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department will be the featured speaker.  This event is being hosted by the Adult Protective Services unit from Waukesha County. The goal of the presentation is to make seniors more aware of hazards and scams on the internet, and teach them the necessary steps should they become a victim of cybercrime or identity theft.

About World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders. The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations (UN) launched the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2006 in an effort to unite communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse. WEAAD is in support of the UN’s International Plan of Action acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
