WAUKESHA COUNTY HOSTS DEMENTIA CRISIS STABILIZATION SUMMIT TO MOVE THE COMMUNITY TO ACTION

October 08, 2018
(WAUKESHA, WI) The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Waukesha County will be convening more than 80 community stakeholders to discuss possible changes in the way we care for people with dementia who are experiencing a crisis. In late 2017, the ADRC received a grant through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to create a coalition of local stakeholders who will work together to improve their capacity to respond to people with dementia in crisis. Over 5% of Waukesha County residents have a dementia diagnosis and more than 70% of those residents live in the community, not in an assisted living facility. As the population continues to age, those numbers will only increase, which makes it imperative to have a cross-sectional plan in place to allow people with dementia to have a dignified life while keeping the community safe.

What:  A coalition of stakeholders has been working for 10 months to do a community scan and compile a list of best practices for improving a community’s ability to care for people with dementia who are experiencing crisis. Through monthly meetings and two previous summits, the coalition has come up with a list of possible action steps, and now they are convening the community to get feedback and choose an action plan for 2019.

Who:   Approximately 80 community stakeholders who represent many organizations and segments of the community including; non-profits, health care systems, local businesses, municipal leaders, first responders, family caregivers, and more.

When: Wednesday, October 10th, 2018 from 8 a.m. until noon

Where: Richard T. Anderson Education Center – Waukesha County Technical College:
              800 Main Street | Pewaukee, WI 53072
