WAUKESHA COUNTY PARKS TO HOST FREE WETLAND MONITORING ORIENTATIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS
“We are so pleased to be able to offer opportunities for citizen members of the public to get hands on with conservation by helping collect valuable data for our parklands,” said Dale Shaver, Park System Director. “The data collected will be used to guide the management and improvement of the unique natural elements of our parks for future generations to enjoy.”
The wetland monitoring orientation sessions will be held at Retzer Nature Center, S14W28167 Madison Street, Waukesha, on Saturday, February 16 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. or on Tuesday, February 19 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Registration is required three days prior to the program.
Volunteers do not need any prior experience to participate, the training will teach people how to identify and document the presence and distribution of sensitive wildlife populations such as salamanders, frogs, toads, crayfish and fairy shrimp. All equipment will be provided.
“It is thrilling to experience the abundance of life within an ephemeral wetland,” said Julia Robson, Waukesha County Conservation Biologist. “Preserving the ecological integrity and function of these natural areas is important since they provide crucial habitat for species of amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates.”
